Young Stars Shine as G League Ignite Defeats Perth Wildcats
Holland and Buzelis Display Talent in Anticipated Exhibition Matchup
The G League Ignite and the Perth Wildcats of Australia’s National Basketball League met in a highly anticipated exhibition game in Las Vegas. With no clear number-one prospect in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft, the contest offered a chance for draft-eligible players to showcase their skills. Two young stars, Ron Holland and Matas Buzelis, performed impressively in the Ignite’s 124-105 victories.
The Ignite has become known for signing promising prospects seeking an alternative route to the NBA. This year’s roster features eight draft-eligible players looking to hone their skills against pro competition.
Holland and Buzelis Embrace Pressure
Holland and Buzelis joined the Ignite over the summer amid high expectations. “This is our youngest team ever and probably the most talented team we’ve had,” noted Ignite head coach Jason Hart. Both players struggled early but found their rhythm as the game went on.
Holland, who impressed at the McDonald’s All-American Game, led all scorers with 23 points. His efficiency demonstrated his scoring prowess. Buzelis, a versatile forward with tremendous upside, added 16 points, with 12 coming after halftime. Their ability to adapt showed their potential.

The two stars embrace the pressure to perform. “We got, possibly, the projected top-two picks in the draft on the same team, and iron sharpens iron,” Holland said. “If anyone’s going to go No. 1 and No. 2, it needs to be us. We’re both fighting for that No. 1 spot, for sure.” Their practice battles and competition against veterans help hone their games.
Sarr Also Impresses
While Holland and Buzelis drew attention, 18-year-old Wildcats center Alex Sarr also opened eyes. The 7’2″ big man displayed versatility on both ends of the court. Ignite coach Jason Hart praised Sarr’s competitiveness, motor, and two-way skills.
No Consensus Top Prospect
Last year, Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson emerged as the clear top two picks. This draft lacks a definitive number one prospect. Several college and international players could rise on draft boards. The NBL Blitz tournament offers more chances for implications.
“It’s more of a physical game,” Sarr said about adjusting to the Ignite’s level of play. The exhibition gave prospects a taste of the intense competition ahead.
Upcoming Regular Season
The Ignite and Wildcats will play again soon in Las Vegas. The rematch allows prospects like Holland and Buzelis to further display their abilities right before the Ignite regular season tips off in November.
With the draft wide open, Holland and Buzelis hope to solidify themselves as top picks. Their ongoing development against pro competition may be the difference in becoming the first players selected in June.
The Ignite program has quickly established itself as a premier pathway for NBA hopefuls. Holland and Buzelis aim to follow former Ignite stars like Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga as high draft picks. More exhibition games await, but their initial performances showed the talent and upside that could make them future stars.
